A survey has revealed what kids can do in the back seat that most often causes potentially dangerous distractions for drivers.

The study, which involved 500 mothers and fathers who drive, found that sibling fights top the list of distractions, with 44% saying it is their biggest nightmare behind the wheel.

Another 39 percent said intense screaming fits rattle them while driving, and 37 percent go crazy from a constant barrage of questions.

In an attempt to restore order, more than half of parents resort to bribing their kids with snacks mid-journey. But for many (32%), the most effective trick is handing over a tablet or phone to keep them occupied.

However, these distractions can be quite dangerous. More than a third of parents admitted taking their eyes off the road to deal with kids who had wriggled out of their seat belts, while one in five parents ended up in an accident because of the chaos.

The research was commissioned by Volvo Car UK as part of its Roadside Nature campaign, in partnership with the Eden Project and wildlife presenter Steve Backshall.

Together, they launched a nature-themed activity pack to keep kids entertained with what’s outside the car window, keeping them away from screens and allowing parents to focus on the road.

“By encouraging children to appreciate their surroundings during journeys, we not only keep them entertained but also minimize driver distractions, creating a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone,” said Backshall.
